TAKE ROOT Shrines to the Wind

Goal:  The forces that bring together mobile and sculptural elements are imperceptible by the physical senses, but are perceptible to a higher consciousness, hence feeding the spiritual imagination.  The intent of the sculptures is to dispel tense emotions. I believe that finding an external representation of order may resonate within the mind and soothe. Hence the sculptures are meditative. They chant….“Rest your eyes and realize our world is full of light, water and growth.”  The sculptures take root in your garden, your window, and your mind.

Materials:  I build my sculptures from parts of objects of a bygone era. The old items were created in the last 50 years. They were created for mass consumption with compromised quality. I salvage the magic and worthy parts of these objects; the pieces that hold beauty and re-assemble them, intermingling elements from the natural world.

While in a thrift store I find a broken necklace and see mountain rain. Upon finding a pinecone during a hike I see a perched bird. The composition begins.

Individual pieces of the sculpture each have an essence. They also have their own life cycle. In the current sculptural composition they have all been united in yet another transient and fluid form. I mix forms spit out by the sea with tooled cast-offs of society.

Process:  I usually start with two pieces that in my mind must be joined. The pieces are chosen with the recognition of possibility to delight the viewer with subtle, dawning beauty…. Together the pieces expand the energy into the initially intended direction. The direction is defined by the exquisiteness of the natural world. In my compositions I re-invent objects to capture moments when the eye can on the heavens espy.
